Evelyn Evelyn (live @ Arendbergschouwburg in Antwerp)

Missed their concert in Amsterdam because of "11 minuten" play.

Loved it! As burlesque as expected. Bit sad that it was a seating area, so the crowd was rather timid. They commented on this, but I am not sure whether they'd always do that.

warning: total fanboy moment

Afterwards, the signing, and yes Neil Gaiman was there. Total fanboy moment (even slightly worse than when meeting Tim Burton at the 25th AFFF). I'm not sure what I said to him, but I got his autograph and I shook his hand twice and I was a total fool and it changed my evening and life.

Sorry 'bout that, but that's what it felt like. And it made me realise again I need to write write write.

Rufus Wainwright - "Cigarettes And Chocolate Milk (Reprise)"

Thought his music really didn't do it for me, probably because of his horrible version of "Halleluiah" from Shrek, but this is the second song I heard of him today and it's pretty alright.

The other: "Poses"

Joan Baez - "Blue Raincoat"

fuck! I finally came free from Tori Amos' version for some time now, but now I'm thrown right back at it.

Played it a lot, around the days I met G.,A. for what would later turn out to be the last time.

It's not even a nice version, too overdone.

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - "This Land Is Your Land"

Reggae, swinging!

Tom Waits - "Brawlers, Bawlers, Bastards"

raw album, dark pub, fat grungy gitars, a broken lightbulb.

cd 1: Brawlers
  • "road to piece" - rough, painful, war, death. angry at Bush.
  • "rains on me" - gospel-ish, but in a really really Tom Waits way. Funny
cd 2: Bawlers

softer, more melodious, sad. waltzing in the rain on a glimmering street
  • "long way home" - soft, rhythmic, I love you baby but I always take the long way home
  • "little drop of poison" - will always love this song. but what changes in his voice after the 1st verse? seems almost like it's in antiphase
  • "Tell it to me" - Cohen-ish. so much that for a moment I thought I recognized it
  • "Little Man" - jazzy, slow
cd 3: Bastards

it's half spoken-word!
  • "What Keeps Mankind Alive" - it is indeed the same song as the one on the Pet Shop Boys' Rarities album! Who was first?! wonderful!!
  • "Two Sisters" - Irish

Billie Holiday - "Definite Edition"

(all kind of wonderful songs of course)

  • "strange fruit": the kind of melancholy Billie Holiday song which is the reason I put this album on
  • "Don't Explain" : hush now, don't explain...
  • "You're My Thrill" : old scary-film music opening
