Twin Peaks

I've been slow watching this show for more than a year now. Last night I realized that the reason this works so well for me (David Lynch' work in general, and others like him) is because when every day logic is stripped away, everything - including people, places, objects - becomes laden with emotion and relative meaning. It exposes a rawness of what we feel, want and fear by removing the thick layer of 'normality'.

The reason why so many Lynch wannabe's fail is exactly because they don't realize that. They just muck around with the storyline, create weird situations, crazy characters and illogical or impossible plots and think they did the same. But you need to have an idea of what you expose if you want to do it right. Otherwise the abyss is just a plain black square and nobody will care.

Julee Cruise - "The Voice of Love"

Saw her on my 2listen list. This is the first album that she put out after Angelo Badalamenti discovered her.

Released about 3 years after Blue Velvet.

Very much as expected.

• Kool Kat Walk - dark swingy. Nice.
• Questions in a World of Blue - very slow, definitely not good every day or night, but at times wonderful to drift off

Julee Cruise - "into the Night"

This kind of explains all: Julee Cruise was the talent scout for composer Angelo Badalamenti when he was working on David Lynch's film Blue Velvet in 1985. Badalamenti discovered that her airy voice fit a song for the film, so she wound up recording "Mysteries of Love" for the soundtrack. Three years later, she released her first album, Floating into the Night, which featured music by Badalamenti and lyrics by Lynch.

Also: very strang unsuspected sound effect.

This might be music that quickly becomes tiring, but nevertheless intriguing enough to look into.
