I Am Kloot - "Avenue of Hope"

no-one's born, no-one dies,
no-one loves, so no-one cries,
and we wait to see just what we will become

don't let me borrow, don't let me bring,
don't let me wallow, don't make me sing,
let me see just who I will become

Nicolas Winding Fern - "Drive"

slow, but intriguing. Music-wise 80's. Bladerunner elements.

Some parts, particularly in the beginning, a bit too slow. Much use of slow motion.

Good to have a film who doesn't jump from quick action to fast-paced dialogue. Takes his time.

Tron-ish music.

Why the pink titles? Curious choice.

Danny Boy

What's the best version?
I skip Johnny Cash and Tom Jones. I shiver just to think of Nana Mouskouri and the Kelly Family.
The Dubliners? Pretty good. Irish Tenors? Classic, but they have their touch. The Pogues? Pretty good, rooting in today's world with yesterday's sound.

update

Dave Matthews Band: no!
Eric Clapton: some horrible plonky-guitar version
Sarah Vaughan: too theatrical, as if she is in a musical

Ken Burns - "Baseball"

Impressive documentary about the origins and history of baseball, particularly if you know next to nothing about it.

  • "It's not philosophical, it's not metaphysical, it's just so much fun!"
  • [Civil War] "The left- and rightfielder could both make it back to our ranks. But we had not just lost our centerfielder, but also the only baseball in Alexandria, Texas." [soldier's diary]
  • "I've heard we won the baseball game because our pitcher has a fine curveball. The purpose of the curveball is to deliberately deceive the batter. Harvard is not in the business of teaching perception."
  • I am dumb, Harry
  • sometimes there would be a keg of beer at 3rd base, to provide some extra support to the player.

Pusher (1996)

Nicolas Fern.

Rather rough film about a guy dealing drugs, sliding down the slippery slope of owing more and more...

Not bad, not crazily good. Don't watch if you're in a difficult mood.

Gotye - "Seven Hours with a Backseat Driver"

Strange instrumental song. Nice. Bit of Middle East influences.
